Yellow Belly - Oil

Yellow Belly - Oil
6x6, oil on board
Day 3 of 30...this closeup of a boat in the harbor is as "loose" as I can paint.   My tendency is to paint too precisely and (you would think) painting precisely would be harder than painting loosely...but au contraire...not the case at all!   So, the next time you see a painting that's painted loosely...consider the difficulty and admire the artist's finese!    A little tidbit....the boat's lettering really wasn't FYI in really life...but I liked it, so it stuck.  A little FYI about this piece.

  1. I know what you mean...I find painting loosely almost impossible. I always want to go back in and tidy things up, lol! Beautiful painting!

  2. Boy I feel what you are saying as well, no matter how hard I intend to loosen up, it just doesn't happen!! What caught me here was the wonderful yellow hull of the boat and quiet peaceful setting at the dock. You set a great stage and like your little FYI tidbit!! Got t go so I can check out more of your site.

  3. LOL, fun.. FYI. Oh how I wish I could paint loose. LOve loose watercolors... admire so many artists who can do that. I start off trying... and then lose my way. Here's to continuing the attempt!

  4. You nailed some loose painting that has alluded me as well. I try and I try, but Like Sherry, I feel the need to tidy things up. Stop it Sharon! Great job!

  5. Thanks so much for the feedback ladies...I don't know if I'll ever be "painterly" without the "pain"
